All men want to live longer. Well, almost all men. But the quest for a longer, healthier life is kind of like the modern quest for the Holy Grail. Gather ye, knights of the Round Table, and read on.
Or stare on. Yep, turns out that a part of the Holy Grail was staring at boobs. Bewbz. Babes. Booo… *drools*
As the NyPost reports, science has finally settled on the six things that can prolong the lives of men. And oh boy, do men need some life extension: in the UK alone, men make it to 79 on average, while women are expected to live up to age 82. So, what’s up with that, fellow men? And how can we fix it? Well, here’s how.
1. Stare at boobs. If you already do, please stare some more.
A 2012 study from the Archives of Internal Medicine journal found that staring at women’s breasts created a positive mindset in men, followed by positive thinking. The effect was the same when men looked at cute animals, and a year later, these positive thoughts turned out to have a powerful effect on men’s choices when it came to health. One group consisted of patients with coronary artery disease, and more than half of them increased their physical activity. In contrast, only 37% of the control group (who weren’t shown boobs and didn’t write down positive thoughts) did the same. A similar effect was observed in patients with high blood pressure.
2. Have lots of sex
It’s what every man wants, and for good reason, it turns out. A BMJ study discovered that a healthy sex life could decrease men’s mortality by a whopping 50%. See, sex is a physical activity that promotes physical well-being, and is a huge stress reliever. Illnesses and disease? Bah, no chance with sex! Feeling down? No way, since sex releases the hormone of happiness – serotonin. In the study, people who experienced more orgasms lived 3 to 8 years longer. No wonder we crave sex so much!
3. Get married
It may sound controversial, but married men live longer on average. Especially those who got married after the age of 25. Why? No one really knows, but most healthy males don’t marry that early, as opposed to the less healthy ones. Could it also be a maturity thing? Science has yet to answer this comprehensively, but the numbers don’t lie.
4. Have kids
It’s a natural progression, really, and it makes sense. A study published in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health found a funny thing: once parents reached the age of 60, fathers had their lives prolonged by 2 years, while the life expectancy of mothers was increased by 1.5 years.
5. Being responsible
The Journal of Personality and Social Psychology published a study that delved into the behavior of old people in nursing homes. They found that if a person was given something to care for (a plant, for example) they experienced greater alertness, better socialization, and improved general functioning. Maybe that’s why having kids is good for you?
6. Get yourself a dad bod
Most men gain a bit of weight after they have kids (or hit their 30s), but scientists say that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Richard G. Bribiescas, in his book called How Men Age, argues that males with a tubby are in fact, less likely to suffer a heart attack or come down with prostate cancer. Additionally, these dad bod fathers are more likely to spend quality time with their children.
